What Are You Reading Now?

I’m reading False Value by Ben Aaronovitch, How to Invent Everything by Ryan North, and Tehanu by Ursula K. Le Guin

False Value by Ben Aaronovitch

False Value is the recent Rivers of London novel, a British urban fantasy series with a lovely, strong voice. It’s a police procedural, but with magic. The cases are always interesting, and Aaronovitch really fleshes his worlds out.

I’m not that far into False Value, but I had a few false starts because of the way the story is plotted. Now that I’m a few chapters in though, things are evening out. Peter Grant, the point-of-view character, is just as sweet and strong as he usually is.

How to Invent Everything by Ryan North

Let’s pretend you’re a time traveler who accidentally moors themselves in prehistory. This book claims to provide everything one would need to reinvent civilization. It’s a long ass book.

I’ve been reading How to Invent Everything by Ryan North for over a year now. It isn’t the fault of the book, and is really a testament to its readability that I’ve managed to keep coming back. It’s just that the scope of the book is very wide; when North says Everything, he means it.

Tehanu by Ursula K. Le Guin

Tehanu is the last book in the Earthsea Cycle by Ursula K. Le Guin. It brings back Tenar, the main character of the second book, and ties the whole series up bitter sweetly for everyone.

I started re-reading the Earthsea Cycle in December of last year, hoping that Le Guin would refresh my heart. I’m on the fourth book so far, and Le Guin’s stories have gone a long way towards stabilizing my mental health. There’s an ideological purity to the books that just resonates with me, and I’m not looking forward to finishing the series. :c
